Welding / QA Engineer

Established in 1964, we have built up an excellent reputation over 50 years as one of the leading pressure vessel and process plant equipment manufacturers in the UK. We have two manufacturing facilities in Heywood, Lancashire where we employ 41 full time members of staff.

An exciting opportunity for a Welding / QA Engineer has arisen within the team here at Gilwood. The role will be predominantly office based and will involve the assessment of welding and fabrication processes, welding quality assurance, dealing with technical welding queries and liaising with notified third-party and customer’s inspection services.

We are looking for an experienced welding engineer who will provide support for welding operations in the manufacture of bespoke equipment in our fabrication facility. This is a key role for the control of welding quality and the ongoing development of quality standards in the business. The incumbent will also be the Responsible Welding Coordinator (RWC) for Gilwood against the requirements of ISO 3834 and EN 1090 and have the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to demonstrate competence to fulfil their allocated responsibilities.

Your role will involve;

  • Developing concepts, designs, performance and fabrication, test and modifications
  • Recommending weld equipment (process), materials selection and evaluation
  • Preparing and conducting weld engineering analysis of materials and procedures
  • Utilising knowledge of metallurgy and material weldability
  • Creating and developing welding standards and specifications.
  • Developing special weld repairs as required.
  • Providing general welding engineering support to our technical sales team.
  • Carrying out the full range of welding engineering activities including internal technical audits and appraisals of design, manufacture and suppliers.
  • Leading all activities associated with the requirements of ISO 3834, EN 1090 and ASME U Stamp and China License.
  • Supporting the QA department as required in external audits for ISO 9001 and compiling welding and NDT documentation for manufacturing databooks.

In your career to date, you will have gained sound knowledge & experience in;

  • Welding coordination tasks with a demonstrable level of professional competence
  • ISO 9001 quality management system
  • Product, Welding and Inspection Standards: ASME VIII Div. 1, B31.3, EN1090-2, PD5500, EN13445, EN 14015, EN ISO 15614-1, EN ISO 9606-1 & 4, EN287-1, EN ISO 14732.

Key Skills and Experience;

  • Knowledge of welding concepts, practices and procedures
  • Understanding of welding equipment and technologies
  • • Competent with up-to-date computer applications including Windows 10, Microsoft Office Applications and Adobe Acrobat.
  • You will ideally have used Epicor (ERP Software) and Q-Pulse (Electronics Quality Management Software) however this is not essential.
  • Ability to solve complex technical problems
  • Auditor skills (i.e. Trained and competent in auditing)
  • Project management, planning and organisation

Required Qualifications/experience;

  • The International Institute of Welding (IIW) and European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting (EWF) diplomas (I/EWE, I/EWT and I/EWS).
  • National qualifications that may also be considered to demonstrate knowledge include the Cranfield University MSc in Welding Engineering, the TWI diplomas in welding, or other equivalent welding and fabrication qualifications.
  • The Welding Institute’s professional membership classes of CEng MWeldI, IEng MWeldI and EngTech TechWeldI can also be used to verify qualifications and experience and establish the level of your knowledge of welding.
  • 5 year’s practical experience as a welding engineer working across a variety of processes
